How Pin-Back Buttons Are Built
The pin-back button is the classic, original button construction — invented in the 1890s and largely unchanged for over a century. Production uses a button press machine that crimps three components together: a printed paper or vinyl image, a clear mylar protective film, and a metal shell with an integrated steel pin and clasp on the back.

How Magnet-Back Buttons Are Built
A magnet-back button uses the same printed face and metal shell as a pin-back button, but the pin assembly is replaced with a flat magnetic disc. The customer wears the button by placing the magnetic disc on the inside of their clothing while the printed face sits on the outside — the two pieces hold together through the fabric.

Rare-Earth Neodymium Magnets

When to Pick Which
For thin fabrics (t-shirts, polo shirts, dress shirts, light hospitality uniforms): standard ceramic magnets are sufficient and cost less. For heavy fabrics (denim, wool, leather, thick winter coats): rare-earth neodymium is required for reliable hold. Durability and Wash Considerations
Pin-Back Durability
The pin-back is durable indefinitely as long as the button itself does not get damaged. The metal pin and clasp are part of the button — they cannot fall off or get lost. The vulnerability is the clasp itself, which can wear out after years of repeated opening and closing on the same button.
Washing: Pin-back buttons can be left on a garment during gentle washing, but removal is recommended. The mylar face is water-resistant but not designed for repeated dishwasher-like agitation. Standard pin-back buttons survive 5 to 20 light wash cycles before showing damage.
Magnet-Back Durability
The magnetic disc itself lasts decades. The issue is the second piece — the inside-the-fabric companion magnet — which can be lost when the button is removed. Customers who lose the companion magnet have a useless front-face button.
Washing: Magnetic buttons must be removed before washing. The water exposure damages the mylar face and the magnetic discs degrade in repeated heat-and-water cycles. This is the biggest hidden cost of magnet backing — customers who forget to remove cause button damage.

Pin-Back Risks
The obvious risk is pin holes in the garment. For casual fabrics (t-shirts, denim, canvas), pin holes close themselves and are invisible after washing. For finer fabrics (silk, fine wool, satin, light cotton), pin holes can permanently damage the garment. Educate customers about which fabrics to avoid pinning on.
The less-obvious risk is accidental sticking — the safety pin clasp can come undone in active wear, with the open pin potentially scratching the wearer. This is rare with quality pin assemblies but happens more often with bargain-bin buttons.
Magnet-Back Risks
The biggest risk is losing the companion magnet. Customer takes the button off, sets the inside piece down, can't find it later. Now the button is useless. Avoid by including spare companion magnets in higher-end packaging or designing a single-piece magnet system.

Square and Rectangle Buttons

3.5 Inch and Larger
Sizes 3.5 inch and above start running into magnet strength limits — the larger button has more mass, requiring proportionally stronger magnets to hold reliably. Available but recommend neodymium rare-earth backing for 3.5+ inch buttons.
6 Inch Jumbo Buttons
The 6 inch jumbo size does not support magnet backing. The button is too heavy for any consumer-grade magnet to hold on fabric — even neodymium struggles. Jumbo buttons are display/photo gift items rather than worn items, so pin-back is the only sensible option (or hang on a wall with adhesive).
